Hello and welcome back to our regularly scheduled book club!
No post last week because I had a gnarly sinus infection (I didn't have covid tests on hand but I kinda got bombed by dust while cleaning my room and 12 hours later, foggy head and a fever. Which is impressive because I rarely get fevers). But I'm mostly back to normal so WE BACK! Let's talk books.
Welcome to yet another WednesdayBookClub written on a Tuesday afternoon. I got a root canal Monday and while I'm feeling okay enough that eating soft solid food is okay, it's Shark Week and I'm a sleepy baby. Now that we've gotten that bit of oversharing out of the way, ONWARDS TO TALKING ABOUT BOOKS!!
Hello and welcome to a new WednesdayBookClub, everyone! And welcome to the new format of WBC. Well, it's kinda the old format that we used to do on the O-Deck but potato, potato. BTW, it hasn't gone beyond my notice that Musky changing Twitter's character limit, it would make my posts easier but I don't want to support him so I'M DOING IT THIS WAY!
Anyway, let's get started!
Don't worry, nothing will really change on your part.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) December 7, 2022
Now, onto the books!! This week, I finally finished the arc I got from NetGalley, The Architect by Johnathan Starrett. It was a quick read but it's been hard to sit down & actually read
So with my feedback average at risk 2/
I also started & DNF'd Finlay Donovan is Killing It. I got 17% in & while Cosimano does lay the groundwork quickly, it wasn't fun being in Finlay's head. Also, it's weird to read a book & the lead is the same age as you. She's 31 with 2 kids, an ex-husband and a book deal 4/
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) December 7, 2022
One of them is actually on my TBR but the other just popped up. My goal is to have them read & reviewed by Christmas because I have to go out of town the next week.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) December 7, 2022
Oh, & I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna hit my reading goal. It's fine. This has been a weird year anyway. 6/7
So last week, I finished A Midsummer Night's Scheme by Harper Kincaid, one of the ARCs I got from NetGalley. I didn't enjoy the read much, y'all. Here's the review for those who want to know my thoughts. https://t.co/n1gzi6dfs1@mythbri got my full ranting though, lol 2/ pic.twitter.com/L2f5teCyN4
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) November 30, 2022
Also, inspired by @novelmemphis asking shoppers to post their wish lists, I've made some wish lists & added them to my linktree. Not necessarily for people to use but it just....Feels official & nice to have? I can't explain it. Must be my continuing imposter syndrome. 4/5
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) November 30, 2022
This week, I'm mostly finished with one of my netgalley ARC. The full review will be up today but overall, I just wasn't feeling it.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) November 23, 2022
I'll try to finish the other one this week because I'm behind on my reading & the library keeps yelling at me about books I keep delaying. 2/

Okay, first off, if you've seen anything cool and SFF this year, put if on this spreadsheet: https://t.co/W3lLYK3lF3
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) November 9, 2022
My friend, @renay do it every year & it's a great way to get eyeballs on stuff people might have missed. Editors, videos, podcasts, anything cool & SFF 2/
Now that we've gotten that out the way, BOOK CLUB!!
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) November 9, 2022
This week, I'm struggling with one of the books I got on NetGalley. The voice is weird because it feels like it should be 1st person narration but it's 3rd. The author also keeps throwing names at me & I suck at names 4/
I'm about 12% into that book. Not sure if I'm gonna continue. No progress on any other book either.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) November 9, 2022
I've also spent the week digging through my bookmarks on here to save book recs. I'm nearly done but it's taken 4 downloads threads, 4 screenshots and a new spreadsheet 6/
Now, it's just the "Hey, I'm looking for books with X trope" posts & I'll be done.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) November 9, 2022
So that's it for me. I'll let you know when I'm done with the links later today. I'll probably be offline today because *Hand waves* 7/8
So I'm kinda behind on everything. I also can't get a handle on any of the books I'm reading so I'm 5-10% into 5-ish books right now. Hopefully, I can break ahead and actually finish one this weekend.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) November 2, 2022
So books, I'm currently stalled in and how I feel about them! 2/
*Louisiana Longshot: 5% in, I don't think I like the Protagonist. There's some "Not like other girls" -ism that I'm not liking but my FOMO wants me to keep going
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) November 2, 2022
*Dial P For Poison: 6% in, no problems thus far but brains is now mush 4/
I'm gonna try to move forward with some of these books, either by giving up on them or actually finishing them. I'll try to get offline & maybe even *gasps* go outside & read. What will we think of next?
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) November 2, 2022
What about you all? Anything good this past week? 6/7
I also have an archive on my computer just in case I have to properly back things up. If you all do abandon the site, I'll be more active on insta & the blog. You can also do what Jinxe did & just tag me in your WBC posts
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) October 26, 2022
Here are the links: https://t.co/He9qSFMFte 2/
But man, I really would have liked more stuff about the mystery in this mystery novel. I gave up around 20% in. Link to the review here: https://t.co/lwPnoivOUp
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) October 26, 2022
I'm also giving up on Lousiana Longshot. I'm not feeling the tone but I'm also tempted to try the sequel to see 4/
if the tone problem persists. I still have two books on NG to review so hopefully, I can finish and review them by next week.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) October 26, 2022
What about you all? Anything good? 5/6
I hate doing polls, not because they're inefficient but because the moment someone votes a certain way, I'm always like "SHOW YOURSELF! Who said that?!"
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) October 26, 2022
I'm not gonna lie to you, my dear book club. I ain't read a thing. I read maps, menus & some subtitles but that's about it.(Lie, I finally finished How To Be Miserable).
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) October 19, 2022
I already knew this would happen & that's why when I grabbed books, I didn't grab too many. 2/
I'm about 5 books behind my goal so I have quite a bit of catching up to do.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) October 19, 2022
In other news, the new Creed trailer dropped & I guess I think like a screenwriter now because the movie's conflict is the same as my suggestion in March so HA!! 3/4 Link: https://t.co/9bF6Z3uhzV
ADDENDUM TWO: I saw this shirt in Little Toyko and was bummed that it wasn't in my size but found it on this site!! I'll have to get it when I get more money.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) October 19, 2022
(Unless someone wants to buy it for me, in which case, I wear a 2XL. Just saying)https://t.co/52hpAp2f7l
I'm going with my big sisters so they got me, we're masking up & I know statistically, everything will be okay but ugh, stupid covid making travel dread worse.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) October 12, 2022
We're going for a Kpop fest/concert thing & meeting old friends so I honestly doubt that I'll be reading much 2/
So I feel like if there's anything I've missed from not reading the first books, I should be able to catch up.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) October 12, 2022
I'm trying to shake up my reading by going with mysteries. I love mysteries but romance has kinda overshadowed that in the past few years (Gee, I wonder why?) 4/
I still haven't finished any of the books I've started. Probably all of the worry of getting things ready blocking me. Also for some reason, I can't concentrate on my phone so I'm debating taking my tablet even though I already know I'm barely gonna read next week, lol. 5/6
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) October 12, 2022
I'll grab an archive of everything today to backup what we've done over the years. Here's the linktree to find everything: https://t.co/He9qSFv4BG
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) October 5, 2022
I think there's also a twinja reddit that @bangishotyou started so I have options about how to do WBC in the future. 2/
It's apparently harder than it seems so we're working towards being miserable. The author came up with the idea from a group counseling where he asked them if they could make themselves more miserable to which he got a resounding "YES" & some tips on how to do it. 4/
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) October 5, 2022
Yesterday was a day of tiny wins & instead of being all "Woe is me", I was literally doing faux-karate moves screaming "Yeah, I did the thing!". I'm about halfway through & in Part 3: Hell Is Other People.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) October 5, 2022
I'm also gonna read the other books I grabbed & see what I'm drawn to 6/
BTW, if you've seen any cool SFF that's came out this year, PUT IT ON THIS SPREADSHEET.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) October 5, 2022
My friend @renay, activist and Hugo Winner does this spreadsheet every year and seriously, anything SFF. Webcomics, TV shows, fics, podcasts, ANYTHING.
GO DO IT! https://t.co/UUqJrB28YC
What I've really been reading/enjoying for the past 4 years. I've noticed that I'm not reading a lot of YA anymore.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) September 28, 2022
YA will always have a place in my heart but it's not quite the same anymore. Not entirely sure if that's a me thing or the type of books I'm grabbing but yeah 2/
Listen, I never said I was smart, okay? Leave me be.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) September 28, 2022
Oh, I keep buying free/cheap books because impulse control is low and my bad decision making has to go somewhere. Again, shut up.
So what about you all? Anything good this week? 4/5
BTW, I saw this tweet and I refuse to be called out alone. https://t.co/fAwKdsvYE3
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) September 28, 2022
But then there's the clean-up from that, especially with the epiphanies I had (Guys, I might be too proud! Who knew?!) so I haven't read because I've been navel-gazing & general adult stuff. I do plan on reading today but I don't expect much.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) September 21, 2022
In lighter news, 2/
I'm thinking 35 books for now but that might change in December. Right now, I've given up on about 20 books so I don't know if 35 is too high or low yet. *Gasps* THE YEAR OF THE BOOK BLITZ!! I love it!
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) September 21, 2022
So what about you all? Anything good? 4/5
I just feel like I'm getting handouts from them & I'm way too stubborn for my own good. I'm trying to learn to ask for help but again, big feelings, especially with a trip to LA in October.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) September 14, 2022
Even now, part of me is like "Make a Toss A Coin joke" and nope! Because I'm stubborn 2/ pic.twitter.com/arYGTzJ0q7
(Especially since it's under Riordan's imprint for BIPOC SFF writers) Ansani, John Henry, Lady Night, Baer Rabbit & other figures show up but it's way more than that.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) September 14, 2022
I had a weird relationship with my Blackness growing up. Black folks hold a unique history, you know? 4/
It also sucks that myths/folklore such as Anansi & Baer Rabbit aren't as well known as Hercules & Thor.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) September 14, 2022
So when I say this book nestles itself against the more vulnerable spots of my mind, with characters that remind me so much of my family, its villains (The Fetterlings & 6/
A second chance romance (Squee!!) and Helene Tursten's An Elderly Lady Is Up To No Good. I already started Tempting Fate and I forgot how impossible it is to put down Sara's books when you get started. She hits the ground running with great, sympathetic characters. I love it
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) September 14, 2022
8/9
I also couldn't get the book's tone. It was a SF teen spy book set post WWI and I didn't know if it was more pulpy or serious
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) September 14, 2022
It led to me & Mom (Who also tried) having a convo about establishing the tone of your story while worldbuilding, either with a prologue or pure style
I'm bummed that the book was a dud but it's definitely given me more insight (and drive) for my own books.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) September 14, 2022
& since August was secretly 6 months long, I didn't read much. Also, I have abandoned the TBR goal and it's slowly growing again. I'm also feeling manic so I might start picking other books too. I don't know yet.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) September 7, 2022
I need a nap. I'll go into further depth late but I'm done ATM 2/
Curse of the Pharaohs. I didn't enjoy this as much as the 1st but mostly cuz I didn't enjoy the cast as much (or the fatphobia). I love Amelia & Emerson's marriage. It's an interesting blend of antagonistic & loving. I could see how one could make wrong assumptions about them 2/
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) August 31, 2022
For when I need to listen to something low stakes and fun. I also recommend listening to the audiobook because the actor does a great job with the tone. The series is poking fun at the pulpy adventures book and with every "Not to brag but I'm AMAZING" Amelia drops, you feel it 4/
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) August 31, 2022
I'll try to finish that last ARC I have and possibly start Tristan Strong Keeps Punching (AKA Black Generaltion Trauma Attacks Jess In Her Feels But With African Diaspora Mythology!) this weekend. Likely on audiobook because screens and holding things are overrated. 5/6
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) August 31, 2022
This week, I'm knitting a pair of socks using a new method and I'm still in my funk so I don't really have the extra brainwaves to spare. That said, I'm listening to Curse of the Pharaohs, Amelia Peabody #2!
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) August 24, 2022
Now that I know Amelia's prickly nature, it's been a blast 2/
(Lady Baskerville has moved back into the house). Also, for someone who reads a lot of romance, I wasn't expecting Amelia and Emerson to be quite so amorous (*Please read last sentence with transatlantic accent*). These two are absolute horndogs for each other and I love them. 4/
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) August 24, 2022
Hopefully, I can get around to reading the last ARC I got from NetGalley, Teslanauts by Matthew Donald but I'm gonna take it easy this week
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) August 24, 2022
Oh, and I finished Jove Brand is Near Death! It was a fun pulpy read but definitely has some flaws. The review with TWs is on the blog! 5/6
NetGalley.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) August 17, 2022
The book follows Ken Allen, the 3rd actor to helm the James Bond-esque series. Unfortunately, due to movie rights issues (& the original actor dying), Ken's movie was less Living Daylights and more like if Wolverine Origins had a younger actor in place of Jackman 2/
But it's definitely more spy noir. The narrator has a droll delivery that nails the tone and the book has the trappings of a noir too. The guy with the wasted potential, the lovelorn lady who asks for a favor, the big mistake that's so big that he can't possibly speak aloud 4/
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) August 17, 2022
But I'll save that for the review. I'm about halfway done. I haven't read anything else but I've been doing some research on work-from-home jobs. Why is it impossible to find a WFH job that isn't full-time? It's the stupidest. Anyway, onto you all. What have you been reading? 6/7
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) August 17, 2022
She says she might be back next week but I told her not to rush.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) August 10, 2022
For me, I read Ship Wrecked by Olivia Dade. It's the 3rd book in her Spoiler Alert series & focuses on 2 actors (BOTH FAT!) who had a one-night stand only to meet again at the final auditions for a big show Oops 2/
It's a really fun but thoughtful series and the cast is great. Plus, fanfic excerpts and fat leads!! The review for Ship Wrecked is on the blog but I really liked it.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) August 10, 2022
ALSO, I GOT TO READ IT THREE MONTHS EARLY AFTER MY PRE-ORDER FOR BOOK 2 WAS DELAYED TWICE!! VICTORY IS MINE!! 4/
I still have one more ARC I need to read so that might be next week though. Now on to you all! What have you been reading 6/7 listen to/watch.
— WednesdayBookClub (@NinersBookClub) August 10, 2022
I still have one more ARC I need to read so that might be next week though. Now on to you all! What have you been reading? 6/7
Thank you to Avon and Harper Voyager and NetGalley for giving me an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own
